Reliable URLs: Hosting historical ICD-10-CM releases

With all the change in health IT, some things should stay the same

When implementing the new CMS 2023-04-01 update of ICD-10-CM earlier this year we ran into a problem–our ICD-10 import process relies on calculating a diff between the latest version and the most recent prior version to calculate starting and ending effective dates for each ICD-10 code. The problem is that CMS no longer serves the original 2022-10-01 version of ICD-10-CM 2023, rendering our import process without the ability to determine correct effective start and end dates for the new codes.

I scoured the internet but could not find any source for the original 2022-10-01 version of the file. As a last ditch effort I decided to scour my local machine–after all, I would have had a copy from when I implemented the change when the file was first released.

Given that CMS is now rewriting history by serving up the new file at URLs the old file was previously available at I decided the best course of action was to host all of the files ourselves in a public GitHub repository so that others could also benefit.

As far as I know at the time of this writing this is now the only copy of the original 2023 ICD-10-CM release available online. Hope it helps someone!
